This is useful when someone says one or very few words and the responder needs to ask them what their statement means while indicating that it was too brief to be clear. Example: Person A asks "Why?", but person B does not know of what they are asking for the cause and so replies with the question "'Why?' what?"; in Lojban, B would ask "(lu ri'a ma li'u) .almu ma".
